caves in the
Swabian Alb,
Baden-Württemberg,
Germany, just
outside the town of
Schelklingen.
The cave was first excavated in 1870,
yielding remnants of cave bears, reindeer, mammoths and
horses as well as tools belonging to the
Aurignacian
culture of the
Upper Paleolithic.
Further excavations
were performed in 1958 to 1960, 1977 and 2002, yielding
a number of spectacular finds, including several
specimens of
prehistoric sculpture
including an ivory bird and a
human-lion

figure. Together with the
Venus of Hohle Fels
discovered in 2008, these sculptures are among the

Didcot Cricket Club are embarking on
a huge fundraising effort this year in an attempt to raise funds to
re-furbish our pavilion. It is in great need of updating and falls well
below the standards for the official Clubmark requirements. Although
there are plans for a new ground and pavilion in the expansion of Didcot,
this is not going to happen in the foreseeable future. What we intend to
do is re-furbish the existing pavilion and make it good for the next 10
years, with the work being completed by the beginning of the 2010
season.
Our main fundraising event involves
10 senior and junior members of the club cycling from John O'Groats to
Lands End at the beginning of July. They will be seeking sponsorship or
donations in the manner of cash, bikes, provisions, accommodation, fuel
for support vehicles etc. So, if you can help or know of anyone else who
has contacts in these areas, then please let us know. To support this
great effort, we'll be holding fundraising events throughout the season,
such as a Cricket Tournament, Club Sponsorship Challenge (every £25
raised, entitles each individual to 1 entry into a prize draw, £50 - 2
entries etc., which will include cricket related prizes such as Test
Match Tickets, coaching sessions, cricket bats etc),
Tuck-shop/Coffee/Cakes at all the home junior matches, BBQ's etc. Our
emphasis is to raise small amounts of money from many sources and with
your help, we can succeed. This is the only year that we'll be asking
for your help, so please be as pro-active as you can and with a little
luck, we can make this an enormous success.
If you require any more information,
please contact Alison Brisland or any other member of the management
committee.
